We’ve Seen Enough Tobacco Marketing

The Coalition has a long standing relationship with the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island. Annually, the day is celebrated in SAFE’s Life Skills Training Programs and Glen Cove Middle School Health Education classes, On this day, students are educated about the dangers of tobacco marketing, highlighting the need to protect youth from the billions of dollars of tobacco marketing in places where kids can see it.

The event underscores the alarming fact that the average age of a new smoker in New York is 13 years old and more than half (54%) of youth who smoke use menthol cigarettes.  Youth  participate in a campaign using selfie cards, facts and graphics to let the tobacco industry know youth are aware and taking a proactive stance against Big Tobacco.  As part of the campaign students take part in the Great American Smokeout by viewing videos and signing posters and postcards voicing their support for an end to cigarette marketing techniques.
